5 Step Process to Get Rid of Destructive Habits

Wayne Dyer gives hope to those people who believe they can't change habits that helped sabotaged their lives. In fact he guarantees that if people follows his 5 step process for getting rid of bad habits a person can in fact get rid of a destructive, crippling, constant acts.

*Step One:

AWARENESS
It is important to think from the highest place in our consciousness. Not to think with our ego, but instead go to a state of thinking where the person believes that all things are possible. Dyer gives a quote from the New Testament, "With God all things are possible." It is necessary for a person to think that whatever habit he is trying to change that it will be possible to in fact change it. The power to believe in our potential to change things allows a person to put things in God's hands and feel that with Him everything is possible. Dyer asks, "What does that leave out?" He also mentions that AWARENESS and ego can not co-exist. He goes on to explain that ego is that part of a person that believes that his worth is determined by what he has, what he does and what others think of him. Ego is when a person thinks that he is separate from everyone else and the saddest part of all, separate from God. Ego is when a person determines his worth depending on his reputation and what he possesses. AWARENESS is to be able to think beyond the ego.

*Step Two:

ALIGNMENT
Dyer explains that all excuses are misalignments from our original source. He says and believes that we all came from a beautiful, perfect source or world. He argues that a person is capable of living in that perfect world on planet earth. When a person just allows for things to happen and does not make up excuses to stop them from happening, we become aligned with our source. When we learn to think like god thinks there is no room for excuses.

*Step Three

CONTEMPLATION
Contemplation is the highest form or activity, according to Dyer. Contemplation is a way of acting. It is the continuous use of our thought process. When we think what we desire that is what we are going to get. The act of materialization begins with the thought process. Thus, we are and we get what we think. It is important to practice contemplating with good intent. It is important to ask ourselves, how may I serve? rather than, what is in it for me? When people contemplate on what they do not want, in fact that is exactly what people get, that which he/she does not desire. It is important to think for example, "I want to be thin," instead of "I don't like how fat I look." Or it is best to think, "my son will be fine going out with his friends," instead of, "something bad might happen to them." Good things come to people that think good, loving thoughts. Do not rely on excuses, they are contemplations that stop people from getting what they want. Practice contemplating what you intent to manifest.

Steps for contemplating:
Continual use of thought process.
Begin process of materialization.
If you contemplate with thoughts like the ones of our source, you have the same power as the source.

*Step Four:

WILLINGNESS
Means suspending all of your blame. It is to surrender, to let go and to just let God take control. It is to let God direct your life and allow him to live and be part of your life. It means to just arrange situations that come your way and make things work out for you.

*Step Five:
PASSION
Passion is the last principle for eliminating excuses. You have to have passion every single day. Passion is a source that does not allow excuses to exist. Enthusiasm is a Greek word, enthios- god, gasm-within. When a person has passion for something and does not let go of it, it is God working within him. With passion a way will be given to manifest that passion and materialize it. Hold on to passion by not only feeling the passion, but by letting God lead your life. It is important to make our #1 relationship with God and there on, build relationships with our spouse, family and so on. Without passion a person will continue having excuses.

Habits and the Power to Change Them

Habits are habits until we put a stop to them. How do we stop habits from destroying our dreams? How do we stop habits from interfering with our goals? Dyer explains that when we change the way we look at things, WE change. There was a  concept presented by Dyer during a public presentation, "We do not attract which we want; we attract which we are." Dyer gives hope to all of those people who believe that it takes a long time to change a habit. He actually says that habits do not have to take a long time to change as long as people follow his paradigm to get rid of excuses.

A couple of quotes from Buddha:

Do not overrate what you have received, nor envy others. He who envies others does not obtain peace of mind.

All that we are is the result of what we have thought. If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him. If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him.  (from brainyquote.com)

Dyer explains that people have two minds, the conscious and the unconscious mind. The conscious mind, we all have access to. The unconscious mind he calls it the habitual mind. He argues that contrary from common believe people can in fact reach the habitual mind. In the habitual mind we have ideas that have been transferred to us by our parents, grandparents and great grandparents. He explains they are like viruses or what he calls memes. A meme is defined as a virus or idea, destructive or not, that has been passed on to us. A meme has no genetic basis. Hence, it can be changed. A very vivid and common example is the idea that women in the turn of the past century could not vote. It was seen as something unquestionable and unchangeable, but society or the ideology of people changed for the better. A meme or virus was changed and now woman can vote. Dyer argues that troubles such as, depression and stress are all products of our imagination. Memes that have been created by society.

The Effect of Positive Thinking

When people think positive thoughts their life changes. Hence, we are what we think. Chinese philosopher and teacher says, which was quoted by Dyer, "When we correct our mind, everything else falls into place." So it is not enough to say that we are going to change habits such as, biting our nails or panicking in front of a crowd. Instead, a person must correct his thinking and realize that the habit is either inconvenient, disabling or possibly destructive. It is possible change one's mind. An exercise that helps is to wake up everyday and think 3 positive things about oneself. It is a simple but effective exercise. This is just the simple beginning of more enjoyable, happier life.

I want to continue talking about Dyer and what he found out, were the most common excuses people make to prevent them from reaching self-realization. Please note* I am taking this information from a talk Dyer gave to an audience. Dyer explained that he asked people to post on his website what were the most common excuses people make that prevent them from reaching their goals. Following are the common excuses listed:
1. Change is too difficult
2. Change is too risky
3. If I do this, it's gonna take a long time
4. Family drama
5. I don't deserve what I am going for
6. It's not my nature
7. I can't afford it
8. No one will help me
9. It's never happened before
10. I'm not strong enough
11. I'm not smart enough
12. The rules won't let me
13. I am tired
14. Personal Family History
15. I'm too busy
16. I am scared

How many of us have ever come up with one or more of these excuses that stop us from reaching our goals or making a significant, positive change in our lives? How many of us have ever said I can't do this or it's too difficult or I am scared? It is common for people to come up with excuses that will stop them from creating change in their lives. Please take some time and write down the excuses that you have used in the last month that are preventing you from making a positive change in your life. Keep the lis, for soon I will post explanations for the excuses and ways to change our habit of making them up.

The Power of the Mind

Dr. Wayne Dyer argues that people can change anything about themselves. Even though people are born with certain traits, Dr. Wayne quotes the author of The Biology of Belief. In this book it is argued that people in fact can change their habits and character traits by changing the way we perceive things. What do you think?
